The Concept

Imagine a library where every book is a person with a powerful story to tell. The Human Library invites you to "borrow" a person instead of a book, sitting down for a real conversation that challenges assumptions and builds genuine understanding across cultures, backgrounds, and lived experiences.

Why It Matters

  • Breaking Prejudice — Face-to-face storytelling dissolves stereotypes and fosters empathy in ways that traditional media cannot.
  • Community Building — Shared stories create bonds between people who may never otherwise meet, strengthening the fabric of local communities.
  • Empowering Storytellers — Individuals who have been silenced or marginalised reclaim their narratives and find healing through the act of sharing.
  • Bridging Cultures — In a world of increasing division, the Human Library builds bridges between Eastern and Western perspectives, between generations, and between communities.

Part of Our Longer-Term Roadmap

The Human Library is part of Hope House's broader vision — a future programme that connects storytelling with mental health advocacy. As we grow, we plan to host Human Library events in Sri Lanka and the Netherlands, creating safe spaces where lived experience becomes a catalyst for change.

If you'd like to be involved as a storyteller, organiser, or supporter, we'd love to hear from you.
