Legal Rights & Resources
Our vision is to build accessible, plain-language legal rights resources for people navigating mental health systems in the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.
Why Legal Rights Matter
Understanding your legal rights as a mental health patient can be the difference between receiving dignified care and being lost in the system. Yet legal information is often buried in complex language, inaccessible to the very people who need it most. We want to change that.
Topics We Aim to Cover
- Patient Rights Under Dutch Law — Including the Wet verplichte geestelijke gezondheidszorg (Wvggz), which governs compulsory mental healthcare in the Netherlands, and your rights to informed consent, a treatment plan, and a complaints procedure.
- Navigating the Dutch Healthcare System — Practical guidance on accessing mental healthcare through the Dutch system, understanding referral pathways, insurance coverage, and your right to choose a provider.
- Discrimination Protections — Your rights under Dutch and European anti-discrimination law when living with a mental health condition, including protections in employment, housing, and access to services.
- Involuntary Commitment — Understanding the legal safeguards, review processes, and appeal rights that protect individuals subject to compulsory psychiatric treatment.
- Sri Lankan Mental Health Rights — An overview of mental health legislation and patient rights in Sri Lanka, including access to care, protections against abuse, and the rights of people with psychosocial disabilities.
Current Status
These resources are currently being developed with guidance from the legal expertise on our board. We are committed to ensuring all information is accurate, accessible, and regularly updated.
This is not legal advice — our goal is to empower individuals with knowledge of their rights so they can make informed decisions and seek professional legal support when needed.
